Rollende Keukens Amsterdam 2026: The Complete Visitor's Guide

Rollende Keukens 2026 runs 13-17 May in Amsterdam's Westerpark. Free entry, 100+ food trucks, live music, route tips, crowd timing, and what to eat.

Rollende Keukens 2026 takes place from Wednesday 13 May to Sunday 17 May in Amsterdam's Westerpark. Entry is free, the park fills with more than 100 mobile kitchens, and live music runs across the festival terrain.

Every May, Amsterdam's Westerpark turns into what the organisers call one big open-air restaurant. Food trucks roll in from the Netherlands and abroad, people settle on the grass, and the whole thing feels more like a neighbourhood party than a polished corporate festival.

If you're in Amsterdam in mid-May 2026, it deserves a spot in your plans.

What Is Rollende Keukens?

Rollende Keukens means "Rolling Kitchens". The festival started in 2008 as a local Amsterdam gathering in Westerpark during Ascension Day weekend. In 2026, the 18th edition returns to the same park with the same basic idea: independent mobile kitchens, free entry, and a relaxed open-air atmosphere.

Think vintage caravans, converted buses, small specialist kitchens, wood-fired ovens, big pans of paella, craft beer bars, and live bands. You walk around, pick what looks good, eat on the grass, and move on when the next smell pulls you in.

Simple, social, and very Amsterdam.

Thursday 14 May (Ascension Day) 12:00-23:00

Thursday 14 May is Ascension Day, a Dutch public holiday. Many locals have the day off, so Thursday evening is likely to be one of the busiest sessions of the week.

How to Get to Rollende Keukens

Westerpark is about 2 kilometres from Amsterdam Centraal Station. You have several good options, and you do not need a car.

Option 1: Walk from Centraal

Best for most visitors.

The walk takes 25-30 minutes along Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk, one of Amsterdam's better local shopping streets, with independent shops, bakeries, and coffee stops. It doubles as a warm-up route, and you arrive with an appetite.

Route: Centraal Station -> Haarlemmerstraat west -> Haarlemmerplein -> Westerpark.

It is flat, direct, and easy to follow.

Option 2: Public Transport

Amsterdam's buses and trams are easy to use as a visitor. You do not need a Dutch bank account or OV-chipkaart. Tap any contactless debit or credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay on the card reader when you board, then tap again when you exit.

  • Bus 21 from Amsterdam Centraal to Van Hallstraat
  • Bus 22 from Sloterdijk to Nassauplein
  • Tram 13 to Van Limburg Stirumstraat

Option 3: Taxi or Uber

A taxi from Centraal takes roughly 10 minutes when traffic behaves. It is the most practical option if you are travelling with young children, luggage, or a larger group.

Use the Haarlemmerweg entrance as your drop-off point.

Option 4: Rental Bike

The route from Centraal to Westerpark is easy and bike-friendly.

2026 cycling note: the festival organiser warns that the cycle bridge between Van Hallstraat and Westerpark is closed. If you are coming by bike, route via Haarlemmerweg or Nassauplein instead.

What About Driving?

Don't. The festival organisers explicitly advise visitors not to come by car because parking is limited and the surrounding neighbourhood is residential.

If you are arriving from outside Amsterdam by car, park near Centraal, then walk or take bus 21 from there.

When to Go: Beating the Crowds

Visitors at Rollende Keukens Amsterdam Popular trucks can build long queues during peak evening sessions. Image: Viator

Rollende Keukens is popular with locals and visitors. Pick your timing well and the experience changes completely.

Best times to visit:

  • Wednesday afternoon, 13:00-17:00: opening day, many locals still at work, usually the calmest session
  • Thursday or Friday lunchtime: relaxed crowds, full menus available, already festive
  • Sunday lunchtime: last day, mellow atmosphere, easier queues than Saturday

Avoid these if you hate queues:

  • Thursday evening: public holiday energy
  • Saturday from mid-afternoon onwards: likely peak crowd window
  • Friday after 19:00: after-work rush meets visitor traffic

One trick makes a big difference: do a full lap before joining any queue. The best trucks are not always the most obvious ones, and you will often spot short lines at genuinely good kitchens that others walk past.

What to Eat

Every kitchen at Rollende Keukens is selected by the organisation. You can expect a wide mix rather than one fixed menu.

What you are likely to find:

  • Paella and Spanish street food
  • Wood-fired pizza
  • Thai curries, Vietnamese bowls, and Japanese-style snacks
  • Tagine, falafel, shakshuka, and shawarma
  • Burgers, loaded fries, and BBQ
  • Vegan and vegetarian options
  • Dutch classics such as poffertjes, stroopwafels, and herring
  • Craft beer, wine, cocktails, and fresh juice

Budget: expect festival pricing. Many dishes fall around the casual street-food range, but sharing is the smartest way to try more without buying one large meal per person.

Payment: most trucks accept contactless cards. Carry a small cash backup for smaller stalls.

Eating strategy: order one dish to share, keep walking, then decide what is next. This stops you spending your whole budget at the first truck while three better options sit 50 metres ahead.

Live Music

Rollende Keukens is also a music festival. Across the main stages and smaller corners, live acts play throughout the five days. Expect bands rather than a pure DJ setup: jazz, reggae, hip-hop, surf rock, classical, and whatever else the programme brings in.

The evening programme is when the atmosphere shifts from picnic to festival night. The full line-up is published by the organiser before the event on the Rollende Keukens music page.

Going With Kids

During the day, Rollende Keukens works well with children. Westerpark is large and open, so kids can move around while adults queue, and there are usually easy crowd-pleasers such as poffertjes, fries, and pizza.

Best time with kids: arrive at 12:00 and aim to leave by 15:00. It is quieter, easier to navigate, and better for pushchairs.

Nearby bonus stop: Kinderboerderij Westerpark, a free petting farm with goats, rabbits, chickens, and sheep. Combine a lunchtime festival visit with the farm and you have a full afternoon without leaving the park.

Evenings get louder, busier, and harder to move through with young children.

What's Around Westerpark

Westerpark is one of Amsterdam's best areas for a full day out. Before or after the festival, build in time for the neighbourhood.

Haarlemmerstraat & Haarlemmerdijk are ideal if you walk from Centraal. You get independent bookshops, bakeries, coffee, small fashion shops, and less tourist-chain energy than the busiest central streets.

Westergasterrein borders the festival terrain. The former gasworks complex now has cultural venues, studios, bars, cinema programming, and terraces. It is useful for a drink before or after the main festival rush.
